Gambler to face trial for allegedly using dud sterling to place bets

A gambler who allegedly placed a series of bets on soccer matches using counterfeit sterling notes is to have his case heard early in the New Year at Galway District Court.

Charged with a number of offences, Declan Ward, 29 Cooke’s Terrace, Bohermore, currently in custody on unrelated matters, Judge Fiona Lydon was told, made the fraudulent bets at a Boyle Sports outlet in the city.

The Court heard that on January 21 last, Ward entered the betting shop and placed a £100 bet. He returned the following day, January 22, and placed another bet of £400 and returned again the next day, January 23, and placed a £300 bet. The bets were accepted at the time.
